DIY Desk for Office

Hello! I have been experimenting with my own DIY projects here at home. It's taken a few months but I've finally completed my office desk.
IMG_2443I got the desk and four chairs from a Restore for Habitat for Humanity store. This place is great for cheap things to refinish you just have to keep your eye out. The bigger stores carry a lot of items if you're lucky enough to live near one in a bigger city.

Here is the table and four chairs I bought. It cost me $50 for all of it! I thought it was a great deal!

Here is the process of sanding, I had it halfway done. Make sure you follow the grain of the wood when sanding. This makes it look better as you go to stain it.IMG_2714

The first thing I did was sand the table down. I used a DeWalt Palm Sander which I loved!

You have to sand the wood down until the stain is completely gone. This may take awhile to sand down to that point.

SandDeskOnce the table was completely sanded, I used Minwax Dark Walnut stain and used a stain brush to apply it. I let it sit for about 2 minutes and use a paper towel to wipe off the excess stain. I did 3 coats of stain.

Here is the final coat of stain drying. You'll notice in the other picture below it looks much darker. This was after 2 coats of poly.IMG_3174

After I did the 2nd coat of poly, I began priming the legs. These were awful to paint. It took 2 coats of Zinsser Primer and then it took 2 or 3 coats of white paint. I can't remember how many coats exactly I did.

Here's what the two coats of primer looked like. That dark green on the legs was quite tough to cover, but after 2 or 3 coats of primer and paint it covered well.

Here is final look at the table/desk for our new office! I am so excited how it turned out.
